Lord Kelvin: The Kelvin Generator
Between 1858 and 1867, Lord Kelvin developed a water-drop electrostatic generator, which he called the "water-dropping condenser”. It was sometimes referred to as “Kelvin’s Thunderstorm”. The device uses falling water drops to generate voltage. Water runs down from the top, with slightly positively-charged water attracted to the negative ring and slightly negative water attracted to the positive ring. The charged water flows through the ring and into a container. When the charge eventually reaches a certain threshold, a spark will cross the gab between the rings. Lord Kelvin water droppers have been known to build a 20,000 volt charge with as few as 100 drops of water through each side in less than six seconds. That’s without any external power source – simply utilising the energy of the falling water drops. As you can see, electrostatic generators can be made to be very powerful.

Self-contained sunlight driven water-splitting technology, also commonly referred to as “artificial photosynthesis,” typically produces hydrogen and oxygen gas bubbles in the same reactor. This hydrogen-oxygen gas mixture is potentially explosive and must be quickly separated from each other. Current gas separation technology uses selective membranes and is very expensive and the membranes need to frequently replaced.
HyperSolar has developed a novel reactor design and system architecture that uses a high voltage solar cell, that can be wrapped in the company’s patent pending polymer coating, that serves two functions: (1) convert sunlight into electricity to split water into hydrogen on one side, and oxygen on the other side, and (2) acts as a physical barrier preventing oxygen from combining with hydrogen. The respective hydrogen and oxygen gas bubbles to the top of the reactor as two separate and pure gas streams. This novel design circumvents the need for membrane separators all together.

An international team of researchers has constructed an atom thin photovoltaic device with unusually high quantum efficiency – a measure of the photons converted into charge carrying electrons – of 30%. The structure consists of a sandwich of a semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) and sheets of graphene.
