Orientation is a comprehensive program designed to help new students acclimate to university life, providing them with the necessary tools and information to succeed both academically and socially. Guided by current students or staff members, new students explore the campus, visiting important locations such as academic buildings, libraries, residence halls, dining facilities, recreational centers, and administrative offices. Orientation includes sessions on academic advising where students meet with academic advisors to discuss their educational goals, course selections, and degree requirements. Advisors provide guidance on how to register for classes, understand the curriculum, and balance course loads.
Before the school year begins, various information sessions are held covering essential topics such as financial aid, health and wellness services, safety and security, technology resources, and library services. Orientation programs often include a range of social activities designed to help students meet their peers and build a sense of community. These activities can include icebreaker games, group discussions, themed parties, outdoor adventures, and cultural events. Social activities are crucial for helping students forge new friendships and feel more connected to their new environment. Finally, workshops and seminars during orientation cover time management, study skills, and leadership development.
Attending college offers benefits beyond academic learning. Students are exposed to diverse perspectives that challenge their thinking. This fosters problem-solving and communication. College is also about social skills. Whether through student organizations or sports teams, students develop leadership skills and build lasting friendships.
