The RN program is designed to include either an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), which takes two years to complete, or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), which generally spans four years. The curriculum of an RN program generally covers a broad range of subjects essential for nursing practice. Students take core courses in anatomy and physiology, microbiology, pharmacology, and nutrition, which are fundamental to understanding patient care. In addition to classroom instruction, the program includes extensive clinical practice where students gain hands-on experience in hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare settings.
Admission into an RN program typically requires a high school diploma or GED, along with completion of prerequisite courses in subjects such as biology and chemistry. Some programs may also require entrance exams like the TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills). Once admitted, students engage in a rigorous academic and clinical curriculum designed to prepare them for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). Passing this exam is mandatory for obtaining licensure and becoming a registered nurse.
Attending college offers benefits beyond academic learning. Students are exposed to diverse perspectives that challenge their thinking. This fosters problem-solving and communication. College is also about social skills. Whether through student organizations or sports teams, students develop leadership skills and build lasting friendships.
